Investments - Through the looking glass
A review of Newton's 2010 investment conference
November 2010
At our annual investment conference in London in November, we explored a number of topics in relation to the theme of Investments - Through the Looking Glass. The theme refers to the contradictions which have been inherent in the world's economies and financial markets: on the one hand, a somewhat lacklustre outlook for the world's major economies but, on the other hand, the apparent expectation in (albeit volatile) financial markets of a rosier outcome.
At the conference, we talked about this enigmatic environment, and explained how we are confronting the challenges and harnessing the opportunities inherent in financial markets in order to help our clients meet their investment objectives. We considered which investment approaches are appropriate against a highly uncertain backdrop, and illustrated how we are using our evolving investment themes to understand how the world is changing.
In particular, we looked at the implications of high levels of debt for consumer-oriented companies around the world. Additionally, with corporate governance issues having come to the forefront of many investors' minds this year, our analysts and fund managers discussed the importance of corporate engagement.
If you were able to join us in November, I hope that you find this report a useful précis of the presentations. If you were unable to be there, I hope that you enjoy reading about the topics we covered. All of the presentations were filmed and can be viewed at www.newton.co.uk/throughthelookingglass.
