Derivatives focus

By the end of 2007, the size of the world's derivatives market had grown to over $500 trillion 1 . This compares to world GDP of around $50 trillion 2 and swamps the conventional equity and bond markets. However, derivatives continue to be little understood and considered relatively new (compared to equities and bonds), even though they have been a fixture of capital markets for over thirty years.
