InPerspective - Volume 4

October 2010

Welcome to the October 2010 edition of inPerspective, Newton's newsletter for the UK institutional market.

Financial markets were almost universally strong during the third quarter, but the simultaneous vigour of usually divergent asset classes appeared 'curiouser and curiouser'. In the period ahead, the investment landscape may be less forgiving than it was during the summer. However, a more demanding setting need not be disconcerting for investors, particularly when, as now, asset-price valuations fail adequately to differentiate between the prospects of likely 'winners' and 'losers'. The near-term fortunes of bond and equity markets are uncertain but, by drawing upon a well-grounded, durable investment approach, investors should find perspective and identify opportunities for long-term wealth creation.

In this edition of inPerspective, we focus in our first article upon the importance of gaining perspective on the financial landscape amid uncertain times, and we explain how three of our strategies (Real Return, Global Dynamic Bond and equity income) may help investors meet the prevailing challenges in volatile financial markets. In our second article, we consider the outlook for the oil and natural gas sector and the investment opportunities to which it gives rise.
